Last year I discovered a partial row of blueberry plants hidden amongst the overgrown wall of blackberries, In an attempt to strengthen this blueberry lineup, I planted a half dozen new bushes in the bare spots left from dead plants. The next day I went out to check up on these new plants only to discover George and Gracie standing near them, talking up a storm ....in the goose tone of voice usually reserved for "food...it's MINE". Oops.
Yep...They had devoured them....nothing but a few upright sticks were left! Out of all of the huge orchard domain that was theirs to roam and graze on, with all of the young plant shoots everywhere, they had unerringly zeroed in on the poor little blueberry bushes. AUGHH!!!! Thinking that there might still be hope for them, I carefully built and placed goose proof mesh cages around each of the little sticks and waited for a few days...AhHA!...life still. Since then, I've been watching the lineup of blueberries and their little green berries in greedy anticipation for the harvest. Nothing like pancakes made with freshly picked blueberries!
Yesterday, as I was letting the runners and geese out of their house into their new digs, the area around the vegetable garden, I glanced over at the orchard, where the Maremmas are now able to patrol---ostensibly to protect the fruit trees, vines and bushes from bears, deers, etc..---only to see Maya standing up on her hind legs, calmly munching away at all of the green blueberries. So now, its how to protect the produce from the protectors!!!.....what's wrong with this picture???
